The Annual Walk for the Bu Campaign raises awareness of the huge discrepancy in access to neurosurgical care in West Africa compared to much of the world.

WHY?

The world is suffering from a severe shortage of neurosurgeons. African countries bear the brunt of the burden.

COMPARING ACCESS:

In Canada, there are approximately 333 practising neurosurgeons for a population of 39 million people. That means, there’s approximately one neurosurgeon for every 114,000 people.

In the United States, there’s one neurosurgeon for every 90,000 people.

In Liberia, one of the countries KBNF serves, there are currently only two neurosurgeons for a population of 5.3 million people. Until 2017, there were no neurosurgeons.

Sierra Leone still has no practising local neurosurgeons.

Neurosurgery is a critical component of any health system, especially in regions with a high incidence of traumatic brain injury (TBI), hydrocephalus and spina bifida, as well as epilepsy and stroke, which are disproportionately located in low- and middle-income countries.

The Korle-Bu Neuroscience Foundation works with national governments and local partners to develop neuroscience care in West Africa.

Our focus is to develop fully-equipped, staffed and self-sustaining neuroscience programs and facilities.

We do this through:

1. Shipping and distributing critically-needed medical equipment and supplies to hospitals and clinics in West Africa.

2. Conducting medical missions, alongside local professionals to perform essential brain and spine surgeries.

3. Ongoing education and training
