Jocelyne Lapointe, diligently serving the people of Ghana in her capacity as a neuroradiologist and our education chair, has developed a comprehensive two-day neuro conference that will be taught by our expert KBNF medical team in Liberia and Ghana. Alfred Lutterodt, our internal medicine specialist, from the Prairies, is tackling the comprehensive subject of stroke, something of immense concern to our dear West Africans, as well as tackling hypertension, and related cardiac issues. Jocelyne is teaching on neuroradiology components, while Paul King, KBNF Neurosurgeon from Atlanta, is focusing on neurosurgery, spinal surgery, and assessment skills. I am teaching alongside Paul, the nursing care of the unconscious patient, neurovital signs assessment skills, and introducing an innovative chart documentation program. John Sampson, Neuro-anesthesiologist, Johns Hopkins, is focusing on caring for the critically ill patient, assessing coma and the clinically brain dead, anesthesiology issues for neuro and spinal cases, and lumbar puncture techniques.
David Udoh, our deeply committed KBNF neurosurgeon from Benin City, Nigeria, is bringing his family and strategic members of his UBTH neurosurgery team and will be providing expertise and teaching during our Liberian leg of the mission trip. During our first mission trip to Nigeria, I learned that David has a heart to serve his people of West Africa. He began his own neurosurgery unit when handed a vacant nursing unit at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. He handpicked his nurses, provided them with six months training, began the neurosurgery residency program, and purchased equipment and supplies out of his own funds and those of his Head Sister, Priscilla, and their nursing staff. To have this visionary willing to partner with Liberia to establish a neuroscience unit is thrilling. His personal experience and knowledge will be invaluable.
Danny Moe, our motivational speaker and evangelist, is providing an encouraging message to the West African people, through a film presentation produced by Melissa Ratel. His topic is: Times may be tough, heartbreaks happen, but these can turn into blessings in our lives. It’s how we approach life in the midst of these storms that can create great reward.
